The Old Market at Rouen

The scene from a far of an old time metropolitan street during the day can be seen in the Pissarro painting, "The old Market at Rouen" (Bernier, Monuments, Moments, and Memory,Cranbury, New Jersey:Rosemont Publishing and Printing Corp., 2007 (pp.36)). On a beautiful day on one of the busier streets in Rouen can be seen gatherings of many people surrounded by beautiful old buildings and cathedrals. The painting was made with textured strokes that give a lot of emotion and energy to the painted scene. Almost giving the feeling of a blurry picture. Little detail cannot be seen due to this, however the larger picture or message can be seen. By using this method, Pissarro was able to force the viewer to only see the city as a whole and the community as a whole. Individual stores or people are unable to be seen because the message conveyed has nothing to do with them individually.
