Majestic Mine

The Lifeless atmosphere of the orange creek struck my senses initially, while the pungent smell affected my vision of the setting violently. The fact that the Majestic Mine has no capabilities of sustaining life is what saddens me most. Brian Blair’s environmental activism is an impressive example that anyone with the drive can make a different for our world. Blair is spreading the word on the toxic nature of these old mines and actively pursuing a cure. He says that the acidic drainage can best be cured with limestone gravel. When I personally measured the creek running along the mine, the PH level was at a staggering six, which best compares with highly acidic vinegar.

Old mines all over the mid-west are causing problems for the surrounding wildlife. The creek surrounded by the Majestic Mine deposits contaminated water into the Hocking River, thus causing the fish to become increasingly toxic for the humans that consume them. “This is a real, and dangerous problem” Blair explained, “There are hundreds of creeks just like the Majestic Mine just in the surrounding four counties.” It is comforting that dedicated scientists like Brian Blair are putting their best efforts forward to help prevent leakage in the larger and much more accessed waterways.
